Gordie Howe Bridge: another option for cross-border freight

Published October 23, 2026 · Industry update and Nexus planning perspective

A new connection in the Windsor–Detroit corridor

The Gordie Howe International Bridge opened to traffic on July 27, 2026. In its September 1 opening recap, the Windsor–Detroit Bridge Authority confirmed that passenger vehicles and commercial trucks crossed on opening day. The bridge creates a direct connection between Ontario’s Highway 401 and Michigan’s Interstate 75.

For shippers, this adds another crossing to consider when planning freight between Canada and the United States. It does not mean every shipment should change routes.

Compare the whole journey

Our planning recommendation is to assess a crossing against the complete pickup-to-delivery route. Mileage, tolls, current border conditions and receiving appointments all affect the choice. A new bridge alone is not a guarantee of shorter transit time.

  • Confirm the route: review the origin, destination and approach roads with your transportation team.
  • Coordinate the crossing: confirm the intended port of entry with your customs broker before dispatch.
  • Check shipment requirements: review the bridge operator’s current guidance for the equipment and cargo involved.
  • Keep delivery details current: provide the receiving window and a reachable contact for changes.
