The update
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported on October 14, 2026 that its Freight Transportation Services Index fell 0.4% in August from July and 3.0% from August 2025. The index covers domestic, for-hire freight across several modes, including trucking, rail, inland waterways, pipelines and air.
How to use the numbers
This is a measure of freight activity, rather than a quote for a particular truck lane. It also describes August, not real-time October conditions. BTS may revise the figures as data and seasonal adjustments change.
